Kennebunk, Maine

Coastal Maine charm with a slightly polished vibe… but still plenty of personality underneath.

Kennebunk feels like one of those towns that has figured out how to balance being touristy without completely losing its local side. You’ve got beaches, historic homes, little side streets, and enough cafés and shops to make you accidentally spend way more time downtown than you planned.

It’s definitely more polished than nearby Biddeford – but still relaxed enough that you can show up in flip flops after a beach day and nobody really cares.

Kennebunk dates back to the 1600s and originally grew through shipbuilding, fishing, and trade along the Mousam River. Over time, the town evolved into a coastal vacation destination, especially once wealthy families from Boston and beyond started building summer homes here in the late 1800s.

A lot of that historic charm still sticks around today through the older homes, walkable downtown, and quiet side streets that somehow feel both upscale and laid back at the same time.

Mousam River Campground
A quieter campground tucked along the river with a more relaxed feel than some of the larger resort-style campgrounds nearby. It’s a good middle ground if you want to stay close to town without being stuck directly in the middle of beach traffic. They only do seasonal sites though, so great if you wanted to spend the whole summer in southern Maine.

The Kennebunk Inn
Historic New England inn vibes right in downtown Kennebunk. Staying here makes it really easy to park once and spend the day wandering around town on foot.

Squaretoes Restaurant
One of those local breakfast spots that doesn’t need to try too hard because the food already speaks for itself. Huge breakfasts, cozy diner energy, and the kind of place that feels especially perfect on a rainy Maine morning.

Boulangerie – A Proper Bakery
Coffee, pastries, bread, and the kind of smell that makes it impossible to walk out with only one thing. Definitely one of the better bakery stops in the area.

Mother’s Beach
My personal favorite beach in the area. Smaller, calmer, and a little more relaxed than some of the busier southern Maine beaches.

St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery
Quiet walking paths, gardens, and one of those places that instantly makes everything feel calmer. It’s a great place to slow down for an hour and just wander a bit.

The Church on Dane Street
The wedding scene from Mine by Taylor Swift was filmed here. Layla is STILL slightly salty that I wouldn’t let her skip school to go watch them film it 😂

Kennebunk is best when you slow down a little.

Grab breakfast, wander downtown without a strict plan, spend a few hours at the beach, and leave yourself enough time to randomly stop at places that catch your eye. The town has a way of making even simple little errands somehow feel scenic.

Also – parking near the beaches in summer gets chaotic FAST, so earlier is always better.

Every town connects to the next by road – not by chance.

Kennebunk feels like classic southern Maine in a lot of ways – beaches, historic homes, little downtown shops, and enough coastal charm to make you start casually browsing real estate listings you absolutely cannot afford.

It’s polished, scenic, and definitely popular for a reason.
