Old Orchard Beach, Maine

Boardwalk chaos, beach fries, seagulls with criminal intent, and pure New England summer nostalgia.

Old Orchard Beach is one of those places people either absolutely love… or lovingly complain about while continuing to visit every single summer anyway.

It’s loud, crowded, chaotic, nostalgic, slightly outdated, and honestly kind of iconic because of it. Between the beach, the pier, neon signs, fried food, arcades, souvenir shops, and people walking around barefoot carrying giant buckets of fries, OOB feels less like a town and more like a full summer mood.

And yes… at some point during your visit, you will probably see a Canadian man confidently walking around in a speedo like the beach is his personal runway. Honestly? Respect the confidence 😂

Old Orchard Beach became a major vacation destination in the late 1800s once railroads made it easier for people to reach the Maine coast. Over time, the town evolved into one of New England’s best-known beach destinations with amusement rides, beachfront hotels, arcades, and the famous pier becoming the center of summer activity.

A lot has changed over the years… but somehow OOB still feels like a classic beach town frozen somewhere between nostalgia and organized chaos.

Sun Outdoors Old Orchard Beach Downtown
A really convenient campground option if you want to stay close to the action without constantly fighting for parking. RV sites, cabins, pools, activities, and easy access to downtown make this feel very “summer vacation mode.”

Alouette Beach Resort
Beachfront views and easy walking distance to the pier area without needing to move your car every five minutes. They also have a surprisingly good café, which honestly makes lazy beach mornings even easier.

Pier Fries
The iconic OOB food stop – and yes, the fries are actually gluten free. Crispy fries, vinegar smell in the air, seagulls aggressively monitoring your every move, and at least one person in your group insisting “these are the best fries ever.” Watch your food carefully because the seagulls here absolutely steal fries with zero remorse.

Fielder’s Choice Ice Cream
Massive portions, tons of flavors, and the kind of place where “I’ll just get a small” becomes a complete lie. Seriously – a small is too big for me 😂

Rocco, Lisa & Bill’s Pizza
The center of one of OOB’s great local debates: who has the best beach pizza? Big slices, New York-style vibes, and VERY loyal fan bases depending on who you ask. Sadly none offer gluten-free pizza, so I’ll stay neutral on this particular battle 😂

Old Orchard Beach Pier
One of the most recognizable spots in Maine and definitely the center of the action. Honestly? It’s a little outdated and VERY overcrowded in peak summer… but somehow that’s also part of the experience.

Old Orchard Street
The main drag leading down to the beach packed with shops, arcades, food stands, and nonstop people-watching. Throughout the year this area hosts events like car shows, festivals, and seasonal activities that keep the town buzzing beyond just beach season.

Old Orchard Beach
Seven miles of sandy beach, fireworks every Thursday night at 9:45 PM from late June through late August, and one giant summer-vacation atmosphere. The Fourth of July show is even bigger and turns the whole beach into absolute chaos in the best possible way.

Dickinson’s Candy
Saltwater taffy, old-school candy shop energy, and the kind of place that instantly makes you feel like a kid again. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s worth stepping inside just for the nostalgia.

Old Orchard Beach is best if you lean into the chaos a little.

Don’t expect a quiet hidden-coastline experience. Expect beach crowds, music, fries, arcades, sunscreen smell, sticky boardwalk air, and enough people-watching material to keep you entertained all day.

Also:

  • arrive early for parking
  • protect your fries from seagulls
  • and wear shoes you don’t mind filling with sand immediately

Every town connects to the next by road – not by chance.

Old Orchard Beach isn’t trying to be trendy or polished.

It’s beach fries, neon lights, arcades, crowded sidewalks, sticky fingers, loud music, salty air, and generations of summer memories all piled into one slightly chaotic beach town.

And honestly? That’s exactly why people keep coming back.

Saco may have been where this whole road-trip project officially began… but Old Orchard Beach became the first town chosen by YOU.

Now the road splits again.

Do we follow

  • The coast north into Scarborough for beaches, marshes, and lighthouse views?
  • Or head inland through Maine Route 5 toward Dayton for quieter backroads and small-town Maine vibes?

Honestly, both directions sound pretty good to me 😂
