September 2026 – Goodbye Summer!

It is hard to believe summer is already over.

The nights are getting chilly, the leaves are starting to change, and we have less than two weeks left at work before we pack up the camper and start heading south – eventually making our way to our winter position in Florida.

We had so many fun adventures in Maine this summer, and even though we are excited for what comes next, we already cannot wait to be back in the spring.

For me, one of the best parts of the entire summer was getting out on the trails with my son, Miles, and his dog, Neptune. Those hikes ended up being some of my favorite days, and I am really hoping there are a lot more of them waiting for us next summer.

Layla had a pretty unforgettable summer highlight of her own – seeing Noah Kahan at Fenway Park. Not only was it an amazing concert, but getting to be right down on the field at Fenway made it even more special. That is definitely one of those experiences you do not forget.

As for our Route 5 journey, we made it all the way to Bethel! With time running out before we leave, we decided that is a pretty good place to pause for the season. We will pick up the final stretch in the spring and finish following Route 5 all the way north.

I still have a few more posts to share from our Route 5 adventures, so the Maine exploring is not quite over yet.

Over the winter, be on the lookout for some bigger-picture Maine road posts too, covering routes like Route 1 and I-95. We will not be doing the same town-by-town deep dives that we do with our Maine Routes series, but I think they will be a fun way to give an overview of some of Maine’s major travel corridors and help set the stage for the smaller roads and towns we explore along the way.

Hopefully next summer, we will finish Route 5, tackle Route 3 – which means Acadia! – and then start working our way along Route 4.

And Route 4 is HUGE.

There is still a whole lot of Maine left to explore.

Before we head south, though, Layla is squeezing in one last adventure of her own. She is heading out shortly for a last-minute Bahamas cruise with a friend, and pretty much as soon as she gets back, it will be time for us to hit the road.

Our first stop will be Denver, Pennsylvania, where we will be staying again for a few weeks. From there, we will head down to Aiken, South Carolina, for another couple of weeks before finally making our way to our winter home in Florida around the middle of November.

So even though our Maine summer is ending, the traveling definitely is not.

I also still have a TON of driving videos to put together from this summer. There is quite the learning curve when it comes to video editing – lol – but I am getting there. Slowly but surely, I am figuring it out, and I am excited to keep sharing more of the roads, towns, and random little places we discovered along the way.

For now, we are soaking up these last chilly Maine days, wrapping up our summer season, and getting ready for the next chapter.

Southbound soon!
