August Adventures: RV Life and Family Fun in Maine

Hey Travel Fam,

August might have looked quiet online, but behind the scenes it was anything but! Between campground work, camper projects, family time, and local adventures, we stayed plenty busy. Now that September is here, I’m excited to bring you all along again, share what we’ve been up to, and give you a peek at what’s ahead.

We’ve been based in Saco, Maine, working full time at the campground. On our days off, it’s been a mix of relaxing, hanging out with family, and tackling projects around the camper and truck.

Inside the camper, we installed a new faucet (which already feels like such an upgrade!). Next up is a power jack, but before that… we need to deal with the shelving that fell down during our travels. While Jasper loves his new “hideout” in the empty space, I’m pretty over having all our pantry food in totes. It’s those little things about RV life that can either make you laugh or test your patience depending on the day!

As for Frank, our trusty truck, he’s still due for an oil change. Right now, we’re sorting out some tail light electrical issues – sadly it wasn’t just a burnt-out bulb, so that’s been a process. Electric gremlins are never fun, but we’ll get there. My dad has been super helpful with all the repairs.

Even with all the work, we’ve carved out time for fun.

One of our busiest days this month was also one of the most fun. We started the morning with breakfast at The Maine Diner in Wells, checking off another Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives spot from our foodie bucket list. It lived up to the hype and gave us plenty of fuel for the day ahead. Layla grabbed a pressed penny from the gift shop next door.

After breakfast, we stretched our legs at the Rachel Carson Preserve, enjoying a quick hike and soaking in the peaceful overlooks. From there, we crossed the border into New Hampshire to explore Odiorne Point State Park, which we’d heard was a great tidepooling spot. The tidepools weren’t the most exciting, but Layla scored a bunch of sea glass treasures, which made the trip more than worth it.

By evening, we were back in Wells to meet up with Miles and Stephen at Congdon’s After Dark for some food truck fun. Miles thought Biscuit might enjoy joining, but let’s just say… after an “incident” in his car, I don’t think she’ll be going out on any more road trips soon. 😂

We wrapped it all up with a stop at The Scoop Deck for ice cream – so many flavors to choose from, and the perfect sweet ending to a very full day.

One of the bigger adventures was a day trip up to Acadia. It was super busy, but we avoided the most crowded spots and went tidepooling instead, which ended up being the highlight. On the way, we stopped at Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde – famous for its cameo in Forrest Gump when he runs to the ocean before turning back around. Layla ran down the walkway just like Forrest to recreate a little movie magic, which made it extra memorable.

We also visited Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, which has the tallest public bridge observatory in the world and is the only bridge of its kind in the U.S. The views from up there were absolutely stunning, and it was the perfect way to wrap up our mini road trip.

On the fur front, Biscuit is growing fast and settling right into the RV lifestyle. She had a bit of a reaction to her vaccines, but she’s strong and almost back to her usual playful self. The best news? She and Jasper are becoming fast friends, which makes the camper feel even more like home. Watching them bond has been one of my favorite things this month.

The biggest behind-the-scenes project is finally ready to share – our digital travel guides are live! 🎉

We now have two 3-Day Travel Guides available:

And the best part? We’ve also created a FREE RV Starter Guide for anyone curious about hitting the road in an RV. It’s full of tips and helpful info for beginners (and even some good reminders for seasoned travelers).

You can check them all out on our Beacons page. Our goal is to release a new guide every couple of weeks, so there’s lots more to come.

September is already shaping up to be a fun one. We’re planning a day trip to Vermont – with stops at Ben & Jerry’s and the Cabot Cheese store, of course. Layla especially can’t wait for this one.

At the end of the month, it’s time for the Fryeburg Fair, which is always a highlight. This year, we’re planning to check out the duck herding show – something we’ve never seen before, and Layla is especially excited.

And finally, we’ve started a quirky little challenge that feels so us: visiting all the Marden’s stores in Maine. We already have two checked off our list! You get swag, a tour shirt, a gift card, and bragging rights when you finish. I’ll be doing a full blog post about it later, but had to mention it here – it’s just too fun not to share.

Thanks for sticking with us during the quieter stretches – I love sharing these updates with you and can’t wait to keep you posted on all our September adventures. And if you’re itching for a trip of your own, don’t forget to check out our new guides (including the free RV starter one!).

Until next time,
💛 Jenn, Layla, Jasper & Biscuit
