While we have been highlighting the Triple D restaurants, I didn’t want to exclude the rest! So, let’s start with my favorite breakfast spot – Friendly Toast! We have been making the trip down to Portsmouth for years to visit their original restaurant. Side note – if you go to the Portsmouth location, there is an amazing French bakery right next door for some take-home treats, La Maison Navarre. Their macarons are to die for and authentically made with almond flour so completely gluten-free.
Friendly Toast opened back in the 90s and still have that funky 90s vibe. Think neon signs, eclectic decor, and a menu that never takes itself too seriously. I also love that they are always giving back to the communities they are a part of, with the help of new menu specials every 4-6 weeks or so.

Their menu is clearly labeled with gluten-free options. The staff is also very helpful with any dietary restrictions and can customize just about anything. They know their stuff, and I always feel confident ordering here. The manager oversees orders made with allergies and brings out the order for you, which makes me feel super confident.

I don’t know why, but I always end up calling this place Tasty Toast with my kids. So much so that they mistakenly call it that when talking with their friends, and they get confused. When we went to Philly, I noticed there was actually a place called Tasty Toast, but we didn’t have time to visit.

We have been to the Portsmouth, NH, and now Portland, ME, locations more times than I can count. We always have great service and a great meal. My son is vegetarian, and he also can find plenty of options when we come. And Layla, although not a breakfast fan, loves their lunch items (and mimosa flights!).
Some of Our Favorite Items (and sooo many more)

Some Like It Tot (Shared Fryer)
These jumbo cheese-stuffed tots are next-level comfort food. Picture golden-brown, crispy potato nuggets, each one packed with gooey Vermont cheddar cheese. Then, they take it up a notch by smothering them in a creamy, savory cheddar cheese sauce. Sautéed onions add a nice caramelized sweetness, while the crispy bacon crumble brings that satisfying crunch. The sriracha glaze on top ties everything together with a perfect mix of heat and sweetness. I always ask for extra sriracha glaze because you can never have too much. Heads up: These are cooked in a shared fryer, so if that’s a concern for you, you might want to skip them. But if not? Get ready to fight over the last one.

Friendly Toast Benny (Can Be Gluten-Free)
Eggs Benedict is one of those classic brunch dishes that can be either amazing or just meh. Here? It’s next-level. Instead of the usual English muffin, you can sub in their gluten-free toast, which holds up well under the weight of poached eggs, ham (or avocado if you prefer a vegetarian option), and their rich, velvety hollandaise sauce. It’s the perfect combo of creamy, tangy, and buttery goodness. Some days, I switch it up and get my eggs scrambled on top instead of poached. Either way, it’s a winner.

You Bowl Me Over (Gluten-Free)
If you’re in the mood for something savory and a little different, this bowl is where it’s at. It starts with a base of flavorful fried rice loaded with fire-roasted poblano corn, carrots, and egg. Then comes the star of the dish—tender, marinated bulgogi shaved steak that’s packed with bold, savory flavor. The Everything Bagel aioli adds a creamy tang, while the pickled onion slaw brings a bright acidity that balances out the richness. To finish it off, there’s a drizzle of spicy sriracha glaze, a sprinkle of Everything Bagel seasoning for that garlicky crunch, and fresh cilantro for a pop of brightness. This dish is packed with layers of flavor and is one of my top lunch choices.

Gluten-Free Banana Pancakes (Gluten-Free)
When you want to feel like a kid again, this is the order. These pancakes are light, fluffy, and packed with banana flavor. They have just the right amount of sweetness—enough to feel indulgent but not overwhelming. If you want to go all out, you can add chocolate chips (highly recommend). The gluten-free version holds up really well, staying soft and not falling apart like some GF pancakes tend to do. Drizzle on some maple syrup, and it’s basically the perfect breakfast.

Basic Burger (Can be Gluten-Free)
I don’t know why they call this “basic” because it is anything but. It’s a thick, juicy burger with all the classic fixings, plus their signature marinated tomatoes, which add a tangy, almost sun-dried tomato flavor. Layla was bummed when they got rid of the Build Your Own Burger option, but this one still hits the spot. You can get it gluten-free with a bun swap or even make it vegan. It comes with crispy waffle fries and a crunchy Grillo’s pickle, which adds the perfect salty crunch to every bite.

Mimosa Flights (Classic and Seasonal)
You can never go wrong with mimosas. Layla and I love trying the seasonal flavors because they always come up with something unique and fun. Whether it’s a tropical twist in the summer or something cozy for fall, they never disappoint. If you’re more of a coffee person, they also have a spiked coffee flight, but Layla isn’t a coffee fan, and these are definitely meant to be shared.

Ease of Finding Gluten-Free Options:
Gluten-free items are clearly labeled on the menu. Even dishes that aren’t GF by default often have easy modifications available.
Staff Knowledge:
The staff here is on top of it. They ask questions, double-check with the kitchen, and go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable dining here. When you have dietary restrictions, that kind of service makes all the difference.
Cross-Contamination Safety:
If cross-contamination is a concern, you’re in good hands. The manager personally oversees allergy orders from start to finish. They use separate prep areas, change gloves, and clearly label all allergy dishes.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. The original Portsmouth location will always have a special place in my heart, but the new Portland spot is fantastic, too. One thing to note—parking can be a bit of a challenge at both locations, especially on weekends, so plan ahead if you’re visiting during peak brunch hours. Portland does have a small outdoor seating area, which is a great option in the summer.
We rate each restaurant on the following scale:
- Gluten-Free Friendliness: ★★★★★ (5/5)
- Taste & Quality of Food: ★★★★★ (5/5)
