Layla’s Top Tips for Traveling with Anxiety

Hey everyone, as you all know, I’m a huge fan of adventures. While I love venturing out and about, it does cause a little stress from time to time. Something I don’t talk about publicly a lot is my anxiety. It’s something I’m learning to deal with and finding ways to help. Here are a couple of ways I’ve found to travel a little more stress-free.

Travel with a buddy! Having a friend or family member by your side can make being in a new environment a little less stressful. You’re not alone, and you have someone to explore with. It can also help you feel more secure, especially in sketchy areas. Who knows, you might even make new friends at a concert and avoid walking back to your hotel alone in NYC! Safety first, my friend!

Let’s make a plan! As a big fan of having a loose plan of events, I suggest identifying a couple of things you definitely want to do. Take a look at a map and try to plan the best course of action, keeping in mind that time estimates might be a bit vague. If you have a timed event, it’s always a good idea to show up early! Especially in big cities where public transit can’t always be relied upon for exact times. Give yourself plenty of time to get there and save yourself from the panic of being late.

Don’t forget to bring some “comfy” items! I know it may sound silly, but a good pillow and blanket can make all the difference between a restful night’s sleep and a few hours of tossing and turning. Plus, if you’re like me and allergic to everything, you definitely don’t want to wake up with hives on your face from hotel laundry detergent. So, bring a couple of your own bedding items to make it feel more like home and cozy, while also preventing you from looking like a sleep-deprived monster.

Save a little extra for the trip, even if you’re not the best at saving (trust me, I feel you!). Whenever my mom and I go on a trip, we always make sure to set aside some extra cash. You never know what might happen on the road, like needing to stay an extra night at a hotel. And let’s not forget the joys of road trips – the cost of gas and the occasional check engine light that loves to make an appearance every time we head to New Jersey. Gotta love those unexpected expenses, right? 😄
